Pregnancy And The Need For A Proper Diet

We all know just how important a proper, well-balanced diet is for our overall health, and this importance is magnified during the period of your pregnancy.  You need to consider that you must now, in essence, eat for you.  Whatever you feed yourself, you are also going to be feeding to your baby.  The baby will take precedence over your own body´s needs, so you will feel the effects of what you eat very quickly.

You should never skip a meal during your pregnancy, particularly breakfast.  The baby has most likely been waiting for this meal since he or she awoke during the night, while you were still sleeping.  So if you are hungry try to imagine what your baby must be feeling.  You will probably begin feeling sick if you wait too long to eat, this being nothing more than your body trying to tell you it is time to eat.  Listen to what your body has to say!

Pay attention to ensure that you get the right amounts of the essential foods day in and day out.  For example, it is recommended that you consume dairy products amounting to between 4 and 6 daily servings.  Dairy products include not only milk, but yogurt and cheese as well.  This provides you with the required vitamin D and it gives the baby inside you the calcium that it needs in order for his/her bones to develop correctly.  Adding some extra calcium in the form of a supplement will not hurt either, and it is beneficial for your bones and for your teeth.

Do not neglect your intake of vegetables and fruits during this critical period.  Sweet potatoes and other vegetables with a low glycemic index will prevent your blood sugar levels from spiking and quickly dropping, and will provide you instead, with a steady level of energy.  You will notice a significant difference if you decide to abstain from candy and other junk food for a week, and substituting vegetables and fruits in their place.  You will soon begin to feel much more lively and energetic.

There are some foods which should be avoided during the length of your pregnancy, including:  food products that are unpasteurized (brie); some types of fish which tend to have a high concentration of mercury (for example, swordfish, shark, etc…); meat products that are under cooked, especially lunch meats (if you decide to eat a sandwich at your local deli, ask them to please cook the meat a little more); caffeine (sodas, chocolates – you may have difficulty weaning yourself from caffeine, but your baby will benefit from the less caffeine that there is within your system).  Raw eggs are also not a good idea during this time, as they can be a source of harmful bacteria.  Your body may also be unable to handle certain kinds of food which were not a problem before; for example, greasy foods or foods with strong odors are generally not well-tolerated during pregnancy.

If you have doubts concerning what foods are to be avoided, your doctor will be happy to provide you with a list of those food items that shouldn`t be consumed during pregnancy.  Every once in a while, go out and treat yourself to a smoothie or frozen yogurt, you deserve it.

Do not neglect your intake of fluids, either.  Throughout your entire pregnancy, you will need to consume quite a lot of water and fruit juices.  And perhaps you might even discover that eating this healthy is something that you like to do, and they habit will stick even after you deliver your baby.
